Seven Years in Tibet

Seven Years in Tibet by Heinrich Harrer

Last year during a stay-at-home sickness I watched nearly every movie available on Hulu...included was "Seven Years in Tibet" starring Brad Pitt. The movie was a little slow but when I learned that it was based on a true story, I decided to learn more.

This ranks at or near the top of my favorite adventure books (along with "A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush"). The stories of his escapes and the subsequent journey across the Himalaya and the Tibetan plateau are amazing, the human body is much more durable and resilient than we give it credit for.

When the author and his traveling companion reach Lhasa we are exposed to the simple life of the Tibetan people and their devotion to their religion. His western view of Tibetan Buddhism and his exposure to the 14th Dalai Lama are very interesting.

This book provoked much thought on humanity, religion, power and life; well worth the time and a great way to finish my reading list for 2010.
