How To Read Genesis
This book was a satisfying read, it helped me again to read the origins stories with wonder and awe. It seems as though we have two options thrust upon us:
- a wooden, literal interpretation that makes it difficult to explain away some very inconvenient things
- a complete rejection of the story as myth and denying the existence of a merciful and rescuing Creator
My favorite parts of the book were the parts where the author fills in the cultural backdrop for the Creation Story (Enuma Elish), the Flood (the Gilgamesh Epic) and the Patriarchs (the Nuzi tablets).
